The channel was launched on September 13, 1999 as News 8 Austin. [2] The channel changed its name to YNN Austin (for "Your News Now") on January 10, 2011, [3] as part of gradual transition to a uniform brand for most of Time Warner Cable's other regional news channels that originated the year prior on its Buffalo and Rochester news channels in New York.
The station first signed on the air on October 9, 1948, with 10 + 1 ⁄ 2 hours of programming [2] as the second television station in both Detroit and Michigan, over a year behind WWJ-TV (channel 4, now WDIV-TV) and 15 days ahead of WJBK-TV (channel 2).
The channel adopted its name, Time Warner Cable News Austin, on December 16, 2013. It then changed its name to Spectrum News Austin on September 20, 2016 and again to Spectrum News 1 Austin in 2020. The station is available on Spectrum channels 1, 8, and 200 in the Austin, Waco, and Killeen/Temple metropolitan areas.
