The 18-hole, par 71, 6,516 yard course was established in 1909. [2] The course was designed by Archie Simpson and later changed by and James Braid. [1] According to Golf Monthly, the club is on the Top 100 Golf Courses UK and Ireland. [1] The Scottish Golf Union cites it as "one of the most celebrated courses in Scotland". [3]
They merged in 2015 into a new organization, Scottish Golf. To many golfers, the Old Course at St Andrews, an ancient links course dating to before 1574, is considered to be a site of pilgrimage. [3] There are many other famous golf courses in Scotland, including Carnoustie, Gleneagles, Muirfield, Kingsbarns, Turnberry and Royal Troon.

The British Amateur Championship was held there in 1985 and the Scottish Amateur in 1993, 2000, 2012, and 2023. The Women's and Men's Senior Amateur championships were held there in 2022. The Championship Course was ranked No. 2 on the 2024/24 Golf Digest list of Top 100 International (outside U.S.) courses. [4]
The three courses rotated the hosting of the championship until 1892 when Muirfield hosted the event. The Honourable Company of Edinburgh golfers built their own course at Muirfield and Musselburgh was removed from the rota as a result. [7] Royal St George's Golf Club became the first course outside Scotland to host the championship in 1894. [8]
