Epsom is a town in the borough of Epsom and Ewell in Surrey, England, about 14 miles (22 kilometres) south of central London.The town is first recorded as Ebesham in the 10th century and its name probably derives from that of a Saxon landowner.
The railway first reached the town in 1847 when an extension of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LBSCR) from West Croydon was opened with a terminus in the former Station Road (now Upper High Street). The Playhouse (as it is locally referred to) is in the south-western end of Epsom town centre, adjoining the Ashley Shopping Centre and car park. It was built as part of the Ashley Centre development in the early 1980s, opening in 1984. It is currently managed by Epsom and Ewell Borough Council.
