The Lipkovo crisis (Macedonian: Липковска криза, Albanian: Kriza e Likovës) was a crisis involving Macedonian security forces and Albanian insurgents from the National Liberation Army (NLA). [5] [6] [7] During the crisis, the NLA captured the Lipkovo dam, which caused a 12-day-long water crisis for the neighboring town of Kumanovo.
The 2001 insurgency in the Republic of Macedonia was an armed conflict which began when the ethnic Albanian National Liberation Army (NLA) insurgent group, formed from veterans of the Kosovo War and insurgency in the Preševo Valley, attacked Macedonian security forces at the end of January 2001, and ended with the Ohrid Agreement, signed on 13 August of that same year.

In February, the NLA entered the village of Tanuševci and the conflict expanded to the Kumanovo, Lipkovo and Tetovo region. [37] By the start of March, the NLA had taken effective control of a large swathe of northern and western Macedonia and had come within 12 miles of the capital Skopje. [28]
The village of Gošince is part of the municipality of Lipkovo, which is some 25 kilometers northeast from the capital of Skopje towards the border with Kosovo. The region was on the frontline of armed hostilities during the conflict. Gošince has been predominantly inhabited by Albanians. [1]
Vaksince, like the whole region of Macedonia, belonged to the Ottoman Empire for centuries. When it fell apart at the beginning of the 20th century, Albania gained independence on November 28, 1912, during which the majority of citizens in and around Vaksince were in favor of their region belonging to this new state.
