Rebar (short for reinforcement bar or reinforcing bar), known when massed as reinforcing steel or steel reinforcement, [1] is a tension device added to concrete to form reinforced concrete and reinforced masonry structures to strengthen and aid the concrete under tension.
Concrete reinforcing is custom-fabricated from 60-foot-long reinforcing bars. [5] The reinforcing bars are cut to length and bent to specific configurations. The shop drawing and the accompanying “cut sheet” lists the quantity, sizes, lengths, and shapes of the reinforcing bar. [5]
Diagram of two T-beams. A T-beam (or tee beam), used in construction, is a load-bearing structure of reinforced concrete, wood or metal, with a capital 'T'-shaped cross section. The top of the T-shaped cross section serves as a flange or compression member in resisting compressive stresses.
Logo of Eurocode 2 An example of a concrete structure. In the Eurocode series of European standards (EN) related to construction, Eurocode 2: Design of concrete structures (abbreviated EN 1992 or, informally, EC 2) specifies technical rules for the design of concrete, reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete structures, using the limit state design philosophy.
Rebar detailing is the discipline of preparing 'shop/placing' or 'fabrication' drawings or shop drawings of steel reinforcement for construction. Engineers prepare 'design drawings' that develop required strengths by applying rebar size, spacing, location, and lap of steel .
Figure 1: Small cube of a material with reinforcing bars. The cube is cracked and the material above the crack is removed to show the reinforcement that crosses the crack. In solid mechanics, a reinforced solid is a brittle material that is reinforced by ductile bars or fibres. A common application is reinforced concrete. When the concrete ...
Reinforcement bars are pre-installed, just like in the case of conventionally cast concrete, and the rheology of the concrete is adapted to retain the shape of the slipforming formwork before concrete hydrates enough to sustain self-weight. [14] Concrete facade mullions of varying cross-sections are produced for a DFAB house [15] in Switzerland.
Rebar is a steel bar or mesh of steel wires used in reinforced concrete and masonry structures to strengthen and hold the concrete in tension. The surface of rebar is often patterned to improve the quality of the bond with the concrete. Rebar is necessary to add tensile strength, while concrete is strong in compression. It can support tensile ...
