The Great King, Sejong (Korean: 대왕 세종; Hanja: 大王世宗; RR: Daewang Sejong; MR: Taewang Sejong; lit. Great King Sejong) is a 2008 South Korean historical television series depicting the life of the fourth monarch of Joseon, Sejong the Great (played by Kim Sang-kyung).
The screenplay is based on the novel Journey [2] (Korean: 원행; RR: wonhaeng; lit. a round trip) written in 2006 by Oh Se-yeong. The background of the action is the 1795 procession organized by King Jeongjo of Joseon for the 60th birthday of his mother, Lady Hyegyeong that also commemorated the 60th birthday of his deceased father, [3] the Crown Prince Sado.
This drama is about a prince who is forced to live as a commoner and uses his gambling skills to take revenge on the King. Dae-Gil (Jang Geun-suk) and King Yeongjo (Yeo Jin-goo) enter a match. Dae-Gil bets his life and King Yeongjo bets the entire Kingdom of Joseon on the outcome. Dae-Gil is the best gambler in the Joseon era.
