In 1859 Charles and Joseph Hackley started their own firm, J.H. Hackley & Company. By 1881 Charles Hackley partnered with Thomas Hume to run the very successful lumbering firm of Hackley and Hume. By this time, Hackley had diversified his business interests, and was the leading financial and industrial presence in Muskegon. [3]

The township is in central Muskegon County, north of Muskegon, the county seat, and southeast of Whitehall. U.S. Route 31 crosses the township from northwest to south as a four-lane freeway, with access from Exits 118, 121, and 126. State highway M-120 crosses the east side of the township, passing through the community of Twin Lake.
Lake George was originally founded as a lumber settlement by George Lake. It was a station on the Toledo, Ann Arbor and North Michigan Railway. Winfield Scott Gerrish is credited with revolutionizing lumbering in Michigan by building a seven-mile-long logging railroad from Lake George to the Muskegon River in Clare County. [5]
