The first section opened in 1988, with 400,000 square feet (40,000 m 2) of space allotted for home improvement (The Home Depot), furnishings/decor retail stores including the second STØR location (became IKEA in 1992 which relocated to Costa Mesa in 2003, now Best Buy and REI), and a Home Express store (later became Toys R Us, now Nordstrom Rack).
Builders Emporium was a chain of home improvement stores based in Irvine, California, United States.At the time of its closing in 1993, it had 82 stores in Southern California and an additional 15 in Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona and Texas; 4,300 employees in total.
On December 5, 2000, after several dramatically unprofitable years, it announced that 67 stores would be converted to a home decorating superstore chain, House2Home, and the remainder closed. House2Home would fare no better, filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on November 7, 2001, and ceasing operations by early 2002 after 19 years of service.
Orchard Supply Hardware ceased to be a privately owned company when it and its seven stores were acquired by the conglomerate W.R. Grace and Company in 1979. [11] W.R. Grace began to sell off its 660-store retail division piecemeal in 1985. [12] OSH and another hardware chain, Home Centers West, were sold to Wickes Companies in May 1986. [13] [14]
