Per the SCSW, the first year of production for the model 60 was 1965, the R serial number series for the model 60 started in 1969, and s/n R1152xx shipped in 1974-75. Also per the SCSW, the model 60 shared an all-numeric s/n series with the Chief Special until 1969, when the R s/n's started. FWIW I recently bought two model 60's, both in pretty ...
Looking at the SCSW 3rd, the model 60 has gone through quite a few changes over the years. Early no dash model had no R prefix serial numbers. The -1, as K22 stated, is a rare heavy barrel version. The pinned barrel was deleted in 1982 but apparently did not result in a dash change.
Gregory, that is why the model 60 here is a .357 Magnum and with the 3" full underlug barrel and rubber grips. The short barrel .357 Magnum/mid power loads although sharper than pleasant are not hard to control and all + P loads are much easier. The revolver we have does have a bit more weight to help in shooting.
As Ed points out, the model 60 is essentially a stainless version of the Chiefs Special. It was the first stainlss steel production revolver made and was introduced in 1965. The "no dash" models were made from 1965 to 1972. R prefix serial numbered guns began in 1969. The 60-1 marked guns started in 1972.

It has ""S&W .357 MAGNUM" on the barrel. It is in excellent condition and yesterday I had the chance to shoot it for the first time.
These are, after all, handgun cartridges commonly used for self-defense. Here are some velocity comparisons of standard pressure and +P loads (based on Remington and Winchester data): .38 Special: 125 grain bullet at 850 fps. .38 Special +P: 125 grain bullet at 945 fps. 9x19mm: 124 grain bullet at 1140 fps. 9x19mm +P: 124 grain bullet at 1200 fps.

I have tried every kind of combination there is. Tyler T's, oversize wood, Rubber, you name it and I have tried it. I found these grips on Numrich and ordered them.
No dashes anywhere and no prefix letter on the serial #. This Mod 60 has a 2' barrel. Finally called S&W and the lady confused me even more. She said it was manufactured in 1962. However on many forums I have read that S&W did not start this model until 1965.
Here are some known ship dates that bracket yours: Model 60 serial R20499 shipped in October 1970. Model 60 serial R22616 shipped in August 1970. Model 60 serial R26285 shipped in August 1970. I believe this Mod 60 is too early for the Julian date to be on the label. But, if JKing will post a picture of the label, we can see.
