Donna Christian-Christensen, in 1997, is the first woman physician and first African-American physician to serve in the United States Congress. Lillian Atkins Clark was chief resident at the Douglass Hospital in Philadelphia starting in 1924. Mamie Phipps Clark was a psychologist who worked on research regarding black children and education.

The new school, located on Harrison and Honore streets, was named the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Chicago (commonly referred to as P&S).
