Karaikal (English: /kɑːɹaɪ̯kʌl/, Tamil: [kaːɾɐi̯kːaːl], French: Karikal /kaʁikal/) is a Municipality of the Indian Union Territory of Puducherry. [2] It is the administrative headquarters of the Karaikal District and the second most populated town in the Union Territory after Pondicherry .
Together with Chandernagor (already French since 1673), Mahé (since 1721), Yanam (since 1723), Karaikal (Karikal) (since 1739) and Masulipatam (1760), it formed the colony of French India, under a single French governor in Pondicherry, although French rule over one or more of these enclaves was repeatedly interrupted by British occupations.
