  2. Relative dating - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relative_dating

Prior to the discovery of radiometric dating in the early 20th century, which provided a means of absolute dating, archaeologists and geologists used relative dating to determine ages of materials. Though relative dating can only determine the sequential order in which a series of events occurred, not when they occurred, it remains a useful ...

  3. Absolute dating - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absolute_dating

Absolute dating is the process of determining an age on a specified chronology in archaeology and geology. Some scientists prefer the terms chronometric or calendar dating , as use of the word "absolute" implies an unwarranted certainty of accuracy.

  4. Chronological dating - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronological_dating

Relative dating methods are unable to determine the absolute age of an object or event, but can determine the impossibility of a particular event happening before or after another event of which the absolute date is well known.

  5. Seriation (archaeology) - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seriation_(archaeology)

In archaeology, seriation is a relative dating method in which assemblages or artifacts from numerous sites in the same culture are placed in chronological order. Where absolute dating methods, such as radio carbon, cannot be applied, archaeologists have to use relative dating methods to date archaeological finds and features. Seriation is a ...

  6. Typology (archaeology) - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typology_(archaeology)

It involves collecting dates or relative dates that establishes the position in time the artifact lies in to reflect the civilization/events of a current region. [18] A chronological typology is made up of diagnostic artifacts, or relics that suggests a particular event/people occurred during a period of time [ 20 ] [ 21 ]

  7. Geologic time scale - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geologic_time_scale

Geochronology is the scientific branch of geology that aims to determine the age of rocks, fossils, and sediments either through absolute (e.g., radiometric dating) or relative means (e.g., stratigraphic position, paleomagnetism, stable isotope ratios). Geochronometry is the field of geochronology that numerically quantifies geologic time. [16]

  8. Talk:Absolute dating - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Absolute_dating

The only way it was possible to acquire absolut ages with radiocarbon was by comparing it with dendrochronological (and other similar) measurements (Calibration curve). I personally think it is not an absolute dating method, but a relative dating methode which you commonly combine with absolute measurements.

  9. Sequence dating - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sequence_dating

The sequence dating method allowed the relative date, if not the absolute date, of any given Predynastic Egypt site to be ascertained by examining the handles on pottery, general form of the piece, and the stratigraphic layer it was found in. As more evidence of the predynastic period is uncovered, this dating method in relation to the pottery ...
