This is a list of the oldest extant registered generic top-level domains used in the Domain Name System of the Internet. Until late February 1986, Domain Registration was limited to organizations with access to ARPA. Public registration was revealed on Usenet on February 24, 1986. [1]
A domain name registry is a database of all domain names and the associated registrant information in the top level domains of the Domain Name System (DNS) of the Internet that enables third party entities to request administrative control of a domain name. Most registries operate on the top-level and second-level of the DNS.
In 1993 the U.S. Department of Commerce, in conjunction with several public and private entities, created InterNIC to maintain a central database that contains all the registered domain names and the associated IP addresses in the U.S. (other countries maintain their own NICs (Network Information Centers) -- there is a link below that discusses Canada's system, for example).
Public Interest Registry supported ICANN's expansion of top-level domain names. The CEO, Brian Cute, commented that internet users will still gravitate towards established domain names, but new domains will target specific communities. [30] Public Interest Registry has also urged ICANN to address privacy implications of the WHOIS database.
These organizations played a significant role in the Internet’s early development but are now defunct or have been restructured. Advanced Network and Services (ANS) – Helped commercialize the NSFNET backbone. DARPA – Developed the ARPANET, the precursor to the Internet. InterNIC – Managed early domain name registration before ICANN.
