It is called "Dutch" from Deutsch, i.e., "German", as it was the southern center of German-American settlement in St. Louis in the early 19th century. [2] It was the original site of Concordia Seminary (before it relocated to Clayton, Missouri ), Concordia Publishing House , Lutheran Hospital, and other German community organizations.
Italian immigrants later established their own vineyards, especially near Rolla in Phelps County. By 1920, Missouri was the second-largest wine-producing state in the nation. Then came Prohibition, which ruined the industry. In the 1960s, local winemakers began to rebuild, part of a movement in states across the country.
Dutchtown is a census-designated place (CDP) and former village in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, United States, located at the intersection of Routes 25 and 74. The population was 163 at the 2020 census. It was part of the Cape Girardeau–Jackson, MO-IL Metropolitan Statistical Area.
