The power plant is one of the coal-based power plants of National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC). The coal for the power plant is sourced from Kusmunda and Gevra Mines. The source of water for the power plant is Hasdeo River.
The coal for the plant will be derived from NTPC's Pakhri Barwadih coal block in Jharkhand. The Construction Power required for stage-1 erection was drawn from M/s Hescom (Hubli Electricity Supply Company) through 2 no. of dedicated 33kV OH lines from Basavana Bagewadi and Mattihal substations of Hescom.
In the plant, thirty-five thousand to fifty thousand tonnes (34,000 to 49,000 long tons; 39,000 to 55,000 short tons) of coal is used daily for power generation, which is supplied from the Rajmahal coalfield in Jharkhand. Nearly 65 lakh tons of fly ash comes out of the plant every year. Fly ash contains silica, alumina, mercury and iron.
Coal requirement for the project is 5 MTPA. [clarification needed] The coal linkage of 5 MTPA has been accorded from Pachra & Pachra south block, North Karanpura Coalfield of Central Coalfields Limited which is approximately 215 km from the project site.
The coal for the power plant is sourced from Lingraj Block & Kaniha coal block of Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd. Source of water for the power plant is from Samal Barrage Reservoir on Brahmani River. The plant supplies power to Indian states of Odisha , Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana as well as Bihar and West Bengal.
