Richard Lewis Deacon (May 14, 1922 [2] [3] – August 8, 1984) was an American television and motion picture actor, [4] best known for playing supporting roles in television shows such as The Dick Van Dyke Show, [5] Leave It to Beaver, [6] and The Jack Benny Program, [7] along with minor roles in films such as Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) [8] and Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds (1963).
In the pilot episode "It's a Small World", Richard Deacon plays a character named "Mr. Baxter", an employee for the "Franklin Milk Co." Beginning in Leave It To Beaver's fifth season which launched in September 1961, Fred Rutherford began appearing less often in episodes because Richard Deacon began appearing as a regular on The Dick Van Dyke Show.
Harry Shearer portrayed a character similar to Eddie Haskell, while Diane Brewster and Richard Deacon went on to play different roles in the original Leave it to Beaver series. The episode originally aired as part of the anthology series Heinz Studio 57 on April 23, 1957, but was subsequently lost until it was rediscovered in 1987.
