The Klingman Lofts is a former industrial building that has been converted to residential use, located at 400 Ionia Avenue SW, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.It was built in stages, beginning in 1895, as a furniture factory, and was formerly known as the Central Furniture Company Factory and the H.E. Shaw Furniture Company Factory.
In 1874, the new company opened their six-story factory, complete with wholesale and retail showrooms, in Grand Rapids. [2] By 1882, this factory covered three city blocks. [3] The company is known for making Victorian furniture. [4] George W. Gay, although continuing to be involved with Berkey & Gay, also struck out on his own business ventures.
In late 1885, local Grand Rapids businessmen Gaius Perkins, William T. Hess and Seymour W. Peregrine founded the Grand Rapids School Furniture Company to manufacture school and office furniture. They began manufacture in a small factory in 1886. Business boomed, and in 1887 they began constructing a new factory.
The Steelcase Plants No. 2 and 3 complex contains four buildings: a single-story brick factory building with a monitor roof constructed in 1908, a four-story brick industrial loft-type factory building constructed between 1926 and 1930, a brick power plant also constructed in 1926, and a single-story concrete block building constructed in 1953.
