Esmé Gigi Geniveve Squalor's name is a reference to J. D. Salinger's story "For Esmé – with Love and Squalor". Esmé's husband Jerome shares his first name with Salinger. Both have the initials "J.S.", which is a recurring acronym in the series. "Red herring" is a phrase used when talking about a distraction.
Jerome Squalor first appears in The Ersatz Elevator as the husband of Esmé Squalor. Together, Esmé and Jerome briefly adopted the Baudelaires. Jerome is kind to the Baudelaires, but completely submissive to Esmé and other characters due to his distaste for arguing. He is less of a follower of fashion than Esmé.

The plots of the first seven books follow the same basic pattern: the Baudelaires go to a new guardian in a new location, where Count Olaf appears and attempts to steal their fortune. The books following pick up where the previous book ended. [20] There are thirteen books in the series and each book has thirteen chapters.
The Baudelaire orphans, Violet, Klaus and Sunny are travelling with pregnant V.F.D. member Kit Snicket to Hotel Denouement, the last safe place for volunteers to gather. She tells them that, prior to V.F.D.’s gathering in two days, they will be disguised as concierges to observe the mysterious 'J.S.,’ in order to identify him as a volunteer or a villain of V.F.D.
