Bishop Ward High School was established in 1908 as Catholic High School at 1236 Sandusky, Kansas City, Kansas. In 1931, during the Great Depression, the current building was built at 708 North 18th Street, Kansas City, Kansas, and the school was renamed Bishop Ward High School. To replace Lillis, Pius X in 1910 named Reverend John Ward of Leavenworth as bishop of that diocese. In 1927, Reverend Francis Johannes from the Diocese of St. Joseph was appointed coadjutor bishop in Leavenworth by Pope Pius XI to assist Ward.
