In addition to identifying (a particular edition of) a book, ISBNs allow one to search for the book, both at libraries and bookstores. You can enter an ISBN on this Wikipedia ISBN search page. Spaces and hyphens in the ISBN do not matter. ISBN links, or the ISBN search, take users to a special book source page, Wikipedia:Book sources.
If the citation includes an ISBN, click on it to locate online versions of the book, or to find it through online databases or local or national libraries. Google Books will often give access to a few pages or a snippet view. See if other editions are available (although the content or pagination may differ).
A citation index is a kind of bibliographic index, an index of citations between publications, allowing the user to easily establish which later documents cite which earlier documents. A form of citation index is first found in 12th-century Hebrew religious literature.
Google Books and Amazon.com may be helpful if you want to verify citations in Wikipedia articles, because they often let you search an online version of the book for specific words or phrases, or you can browse through the book (although for copyright reasons the entire book is usually not available).
Google Books limits previews of copyrighted books to a certain number of pages. It is possible to jump ahead to exhaust that number from a later starting page by editing the browser URL. For example, adding "&pg=PA100" will usually jump to page 100. WP:GBOOKS explains how to cite sources found through Google Books.
