Kershaw–Ryan State Park is a public recreation area on Nevada State Route 317, two miles (3.2 km) south of the town of Caliente, Nevada. The state park covers 265 acres (107 ha) at the northern end of Rainbow Canyon in an area that was homesteaded in 1873.
As a result, the canyon is nicknamed Star Wars Canyon. [5] Hundreds of petroglyphs from the Coso people who once inhabited the area can be found in the canyon. [2] Rainbow Canyon drains the west slope of the Santa Rosa Hills and the east slope of the Inyo Mountains into the Panamint Valley. The steep walls are up to 1,000 feet (300 m) tall. [4]
The system is managed by the Nevada Division of State Parks within the Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. The Division of State Parks was created by an act of the Nevada Legislature in 1963. The system manages 23 state park units, some of which have multiple units.
The park protects over 11,000 acres (44.5 km²), with 2,000 acres (8 km²) by the California Department of Parks and Recreation, and 9,000 acres (36 km²) by the federal Tahoe National Forest. The park is accessed from Highway 20 west of Grass Valley or from Highway 49 north of Nevada City .
