Pocahontas (US: / ˌ p oʊ k ə ˈ h ɒ n t ə s /, UK: / ˌ p ɒ k-/; born Amonute, [1] also known as Matoaka and Rebecca Rolfe; c. 1596 – March 1617) was a Native American woman belonging to the Powhatan people, notable for her association with the colonial settlement at Jamestown, Virginia.
Smith was released in time for New Year's 1608 when he promised to move the colony to Capahosick. He had convinced Powhatan that he was the son of Captain Christopher Newport and that Newport was their head weroance (tribal chief). By spring 1609, the local Paspahegh tribe had resumed raiding the fort at Jamestown.
On March 22, 1622, Powhatan fighters killed 347 English colonists in Virginia. Instead, the survivors, supported by reinforcements and new weapons from England, launched a deadly series of reprisals.
