Southwick's Zoo, New England's Largest Zoo, is a privately owned and seasonally operated zoological park spanning 300 acres in Mendon, Massachusetts, United States. The zoo was established in 1963 and has been under the management of the Southwick and Brewer families since its inception. [ 4 ]
Opened in 1894, it is the third-oldest zoo in New England and the 12th-oldest zoo in the United States. [5] Located on a 7 acres (2.8 ha) campus, the zoo is owned and operated by the City of New Bedford, with the support of the Buttonwood Park Zoological Society.
One of its most popular exhibit attractions, the Tropical Forest (formerly called the African Tropical Forest), opened in September 1989. The zoo is the second largest zoo in New England, after the Southwick's Zoo in Mendon.
Southwicks Zoo has a few new additions to their habitats this summer, including a newborn Four Horned Sheep, Muntjac deer, Red Ruffed Lemurs, Prairie Dogs and Aoudads (aka Barbary sheep).
