Crataegus (/ k r ə ˈ t iː ɡ ə s /), [2] commonly called hawthorn, quickthorn, [3] thornapple, [4] May-tree, [5] whitethorn, [5] Mayflower or hawberry, is a genus of several hundred species of shrubs and trees in the family Rosaceae, [6] native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere in Europe, Asia, North Africa and North America.
It grows as a spreading tree up to 20 m (70 ft) tall, with its trunk covered by a white, beige and grey thick papery bark. The grey-green leaves are egg-shaped, and cream or white bottlebrush-like flowers appear from late spring to autumn. It was first formally described in 1797 by the Spanish naturalist Antonio José Cavanilles.
The tree is the sole source of food for the catalpa sphinx moth (Ceratomia catalpae), the leaves being eaten by the caterpillars. When caterpillars are numerous, infested trees may be completely defoliated. Defoliated catalpas produce new leaves readily, but with multiple generations occurring, new foliage may be consumed by subsequent broods.
Reaching 27.5 m (90 ft) in height, it is a large, striking evergreen tree, with large, dark-green leaves up to 20 cm (7 + 3 ⁄ 4 in) long and 12 cm (4 + 3 ⁄ 4 in) wide, and large, white, fragrant flowers up to 30 cm (12 in) in diameter.
The flowers are 3–6 cm (1.2–2.4 in) across, trumpet shaped, white with yellow stripes and purple spots inside; they grow in panicles of 10–30. The fruit is a long, thin legume -like capsule, 20–40 cm (7.9–15.7 in) long and 10–12 mm (0.39–0.47 in) in diameter; it turns brown in the fall and often stays attached to tree during ...
Styphnolobium japonicum is native to China.Despite its Latin name, the species was introduced in Japan and not originally found there. It is a popular ornamental tree in Europe, North America and South Africa, grown for its white flowers, borne in late summer after most other flowering trees have long finished flowering.
Eucalyptus viminalis, commonly known as the manna gum, white gum or ribbon gum, [3] is a species of small to very tall tree that is endemic to south-eastern Australia. It has smooth bark, sometimes with rough bark near the base, lance-shaped to curved adult leaves, flower buds in groups of three or seven, white flowers and cup-shaped or hemispherical fruit.
Some are also thought to be hybrids with the wild service tree, and the service tree of Fontainebleau found in French woodlands. The best known species is the common whitebeam, a columnar tree which grows to 25 m (82 ft) tall by 10 m (33 ft) broad, with clusters of white flowers in spring followed by speckled red berries in autumn (fall).
