The first cemented carbide developed was tungsten carbide (introduced in 1927) which uses tungsten carbide particles held together by a cobalt metal binder. Since then, other cemented carbides have been developed, such as titanium carbide, which is better suited for cutting steel, and tantalum carbide, which is tougher than tungsten carbide. [1]

The SAE designation for all tungsten steels consist of four numbers beginning with the number 7, in the format 7XXX. Tungsten steel also has a greater density than regular stainless steel, tungsten steel, also known as cemented carbide has a density of 14.8 g/cm^3. whereas regular stainless steel maintains a density of 7.9 g/cm^3
These bits mainly fall into two classes depending on the manufacture of the cutting elements or "teeth". Steel-tooth bits have cones that have wedge-shaped teeth milled directly in the cone steel itself. Extremely hard tungsten carbide material is often applied to the surfaces of the teeth by a welding process to improve durability.
