The Swan Shopping Centre is an 80,000 square feet (7,400 m 2) shopping centre in Yardley, Birmingham, which opened in Spring 2012. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] With its landmark high rise building, it stands on the A45 Coventry Road at its intersection with the A4040 Outer Ring Road (also the Birmingham Outer Circle Number 11 bus route), known as Swan Island.
The Swan public house run by Ansells Brewery was, for a time, the largest in Great Britain with eight bars and a total drinking area of almost 14,000 square feet serving over 1,000 customers. [ 4 ] In 2012, the Swan Shopping Centre was opened in the area serving the Yardley area in the place of the old Swan Centre which used to hold markets.
The centre was originally developed between 1959 and 1965, as part of a large development for insurance company Commercial Union.It took the name of a street on the site, which was named after the Martineau family, a family that included several Lord Mayors of Birmingham. [1]
