Purdue Pete’s uniforms are old gold and black, which are Purdue’s school colors. [3] Purdue Pete carries a large hammer, reminiscent of the type of large mallets used to mold steel by boilermakers. The current head utilizes a fiberglass frame, but is much smaller and lighter than previous designs, as it is made primarily of a composite. [7]

Purdue even operated its own railroad to connect the campus powerplant to a main rail line. The American Railway Association Building, which stands on the West Lafayette campus to the southwest of the Mechanical Engineering Building, is one of the few remaining vestiges of the railroad testing which occurred on the campus.
This was greatly celebrated, as the Purdue Exponent proclaimed: "The new Engineering Laboratories, which we have needed for so long, are at last completed." [4] Four days later, a gas explosion started a fire in boiler room, and a thousand people watched as new building was destroyed. [4] [6] President Smart later wrote:
The Boilermaker is a statue that was dedicated on November 4, 2005, as a monument commemorating the "indomitable spirit of the [Purdue] boilermaker." [citation needed] The statue is located adjacent to Ross Ade Stadium on the Purdue University-West Lafayette campus's intercollegiate sports complex. The statue was commissioned by an anonymous donor.
