The North Iowa Huskies relocated to Cedar Rapids in 1999. The RoughRiders' new name was chosen in a name-the-team contest won by a local teacher at Roosevelt Middle School in Cedar Rapids as it was the school's mascot. [citation needed] In the 2002–03 season, the Roughriders finished in second place in the East Division with a 27–26–7 record.
During the team's inaugural season in Cedar Rapids, they had no home arena and practiced at Coral Ridge Mall. [6] The team played their first game on September 24, 1999.
