Baia Mare (US: / ˌ b ɑː j ə ˈ m ɑːr ə / BAH-yə MAR-ə, [2] [3] Romanian: [ˈbaja ˈmare] ⓘ; Hungarian: Nagybánya; German: Frauenbach or Groß-Neustadt; Latin: Rivulus Dominarum) is a city along the Săsar River, in northwestern Romania; it is the capital of Maramureș County.
Baia Mare Metropolitan Area (BMMA) is located in northwestern Romania and consists of Baia Mare City (Maramureș County seat) and localities found within a distance of 35 km (22 mi).
The capital of the region was Baia Mare, and its territory comprised an area similar to what are nowadays the Maramureș and Satu Mare counties. In 1952 the raion Vișeu was attached to the Baia Mare Region from the Rodna Region, after the dissolution of the latter.
Maramureș County is situated in the northern part of Romania, in the historical region of Transylvania, and has a border with Ukraine. This county has a total area of 6,304 square kilometres (2,434 sq mi), of which 43% is covered by the Rodna Mountains , with its tallest peak, Pietrosul [ ro ] , at 2,303 metres (7,556 ft) altitude.

Tăuții-Măgherăuș lies on the right bank of the Someș River; the Lăpuș River discharges into the Someș in Bușag village.
It is crossed by county roads DJ171A and DJ171D; the city of Sighetu Marmației is 40 km (25 mi) to the northwest, while the county seat, Baia Mare, is 66 km (41 mi) to the west. At the 2021 census , Botiza had a population of 2,373; of those, 96.25% were ethnic Romanians .
The Săsar (Hungarian: Zazar) is a right tributary of the river Lăpuș in Maramureș County, Romania. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] It discharges into the Lăpuș in Bozânta Mare , southwest of Baia Mare . [ 3 ] It is a medium-size river which flows through the cities of Baia Sprie and Baia Mare.
