The series revolves around the adventures of the five main characters: Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) and his best friend Marshall, his friend and Marshall's girlfriend (later fiancee and wife) Lily Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan), friend Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris) and friend (and future love interest and wife to Barney Stinson) Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders).

Created by Craig Thomas and Carter Bays, the show is presented from the perspective of Ted Mosby in 2030 ("Future Ted") as he tells his children how he met the titular mother.
Barney meets Marshall around the same time as Ted, and takes it upon himself to give Marshall unwanted advice on picking up women. While Marshall makes fun of Barney's promiscuity and ethical lapses, however, Barney has helped him many times throughout the series.
During the discussion of Barney's 200 sexual conquests (which most of the other characters cite as "too many"), Marshall takes the conversation as an opportunity to take out some professionally made charts, showing Barney's low "batting average" noting that only 1.2 percent of the women he approaches actually have sex with him.
Barney explains that he never takes a bad picture. He compares and contrasts his photo presence with Marshall's; while Barney always looks "drop dead, stone cold amazing", Marshall "just looks dead, stoned, and cold". Robin tries to take candid pictures of Barney, but is shocked to see his usual pose in all the pictures.
Marshall becomes angry and challenges Barney to do every technique, with permission to touch Lily's breasts if he succeeds. If Barney fails, he must wear the ducky tie for one year. Barney unnerves Marshall and Lily throughout dinner with suggestions that he is as adept at cooking as he claims and has gone to the effort to take the Shinjitsu ...

Trying to avoid the usual letdown of New Year's Eve, Ted rents a limo for the group. Robin has plans with her boyfriend, Derek. Ted, Lily, Marshall, and Barney plan to attend five parties before midnight finding the best party to be at. The group goes to party one where they pick up Ted's coworker Marybeth. Barney also finds a date named Natalya.
