The building was originally constructed in 1961 but was not completed in time for the 1961-62 school year, so during its first year Claremont operated during the afternoons in Royal Oak Middle School. Significant additions and upgrades were undertaken in 1966, 1975, and 1994. [5] The school was scheduled to undergo upgrades in 2009.

Larrabee died while the building was under construction, and his wife, Anna Matilda Larrabee, took over supervising its construction. From 1913 to 1924, it housed all grades until a high school was built. It remained as an elementary school until 1990 when the city of Clermont acquired the building for use as a public library and city hall.
In 2022, it was proposed that the current Middle School building be torn down, due to poor and out of date infrastructure, and a new school be built in its place, which would become the new High School, and the current High School would be renovated and become the new Middle School.
