Grand Junction is 247 miles (398 km) west-southwest of the Colorado State Capitol in Denver.The city has a council–manager form of government. [8] It is a major commercial and transportation hub within the large area between the Green River and the Continental Divide, and the largest city in Colorado outside of the Front Range Corridor.

Crawford, was a Civil War veteran and President of the Grand Junction Town Company. He was accompanied by William McGinley, J. Clayton Nichols, and four unidentified companions.
The most populated areas of the Western slope are the Tri County area, which contains Grand Junction, Montrose, and Delta, and the Intermountain area, containing Glenwood Springs, Aspen, and Vail. Grand Junction is the largest city between Denver, Colorado, and Salt Lake City, Utah, with a population of 61,881 (2016, US Census Bureau).
The name "Grand Valley" has been associated with the area since the mid-nineteenth century. The present Colorado River above Grand Junction was known as the Grand River as early as 1842. The city of Grand Junction was so named because of its position at the juncture of the Gunnison and Grand Rivers.
The county was named for the many large mesas in the area, including the Grand Mesa, which is the largest flat-topped mountain in the world. Mesa County comprises the Grand Junction, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. [4] [5] In 2020 it ranked as the 271st most populous metropolitan area in the United States. [2]

The functional Government High Line Canal, also known as the Grand Valley Project, runs along the settled northern edge of the Grand Valley near Grand Junction, Colorado. The canal was built by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and is owned by the federal government, through authorization of the 1902 Reclamation Act.
It then empties out of the Dominguez Canyon into the Colorado River at Grand Junction, where some years it rivals the Colorado River in volume. The Gunnison River ranges in width from 100 to 1,000 feet (30 to 305 m) and in depth from 3 to 50 feet (1 to 15 m). The river's powerful current and many rapids make upstream travel nearly impossible.
