An avalanche transceiver or avalanche beacon is a type of emergency locator beacon, a radio transceiver (a transmitter and receiver in one unit) operating at 457 kHz for the purpose of finding people buried under snow. They are widely carried by skiers, particularly back country skiers for use in case a skier is buried by an avalanche.
An emergency locator beacon is a radio beacon, a portable battery powered radio transmitter, used to locate airplanes, vessels, and persons in distress and in need of immediate rescue. Various types of emergency locator beacons are carried by aircraft, ships, vehicles, hikers and cross-country skiers.
Avalanche security, search and rescue equipment (left to right): avalanche airbag system, probe (folded), shovel, avalanche transceiver Portable (collapsible) probes can be extended to probe into the snow to locate the exact location of a victim at several yards / metres in depth.
In an avalanche, one carrier collides with other atoms and knocks free new carriers. The result is that for each carrier that starts across a barrier, several carriers synchronously arrive. The result is a wide-bandwidth high-power source. Conventional diodes can be used in breakdown. The avalanche breakdown also has multistate noise.
Avalanche blasting in the French ski resort of Tignes (3,600 m or 11,800 ft) Gazex installation. Active techniques reduce the risk of an avalanche occurring by promoting the stabilization and settlement of the snow pack through three forms of intervention: disrupting weak layers in the snow pack, increasing the uniformity of the snow pack, and lessening the amount of snow available in snow ...
An avalanche barreled down a Utah mountain range over the weekend, coating vehicles with the white stuff. Many regions, including the Beehive State, are currently experiencing heavy snowfall as a ...
An avalanche closed a Utah highway outside of Salt Lake City during a winter storm over the weekend that brought nearly 2 feet of snow to some areas. Watch: Video shows powerful Utah avalanche ...
A transceiver has an independent transmitter and receiver packaged in the same unit. In a transponder the transmit carrier frequency is derived from the received signal. The frequency linkage allows an interrogating ground station to recover the Doppler shift and thus infer range and speed from a communication signal without allocating power to ...
