In France, there are 37 medical schools, known locally as "UFR de médecine" (Unités de Formation et de Recherche or "Unit for training and research" in English). They are part of universities and are associated with one of France's 29 university hospital centers (CHU). [1] [2] But they are traditionally called "Facultés de médecine".
During this time, hospitals became more prestigious than medical schools. [10] The law of 19 Ventôse année XI (March 10, 1803) reorganized the profession and stipulated that "no one can henceforth practice medicine or surgery without having been a doctor" except for officiers de santé (health officers) in rural, medically underserved areas.
