The hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis), also known as the hellbender salamander, is a species of aquatic giant salamander endemic to the eastern and central United States. It is the largest salamander in North America. A member of the family Cryptobranchidae, the hellbender is the only extant member of the genus Cryptobranchus.
Two-toed amphiumas are the most prominent in the Amphiumidae family and the longest salamander species in the United States, [4] that can grow from 39 to 1,042 g (1.4 to 36.8 oz) in mass and from 34.8 to 116 cm (13.7 to 45.7 in) in length.
The silvery salamander (Ambystoma platineum) is a hybrid species of mole salamander from the United States of America and Canada. It is usually between 5.5–7.75 in (14.0–19.7 cm) long and slender, with many small silvery-blue spots on its back and sides. It is brownish grey, and the area around its vent is grey.
Only five specimens, four males and one female, of Tlapacoyan salamanders have been recorded. All were collected in 1969 by herpetologist Ronald Altig. Searches at the species' type locality have failed to find any more individuals. The species was described in 2020, and listed as critically endangered and possibly extinct by the IUCN. [1] [2]
The northern ravine salamander is a small terrestrial salamander, 7.5–11.5 cm (3.0–4.5 in) in total length. It is elongated, slender, and short-legged. Its coloration is brown to nearly black, sprinkled with minute silvery white and bronzy or brassy specks.
Necturus is a genus of aquatic salamanders in the family Proteidae. Species of the genus are native to the eastern United States and Canada . [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] They are commonly known as waterdogs and mudpuppies .
The southern two-lined salamander is a small thin salamander, distinguished by the two lines running down the lateral portion of its body. The salamander is deep-light brown and fairly small, growing up to 6.5–12 cm in length. The species has 14 costal grooves between its limbs. [3]
