Sowerby (/ ˈ s aʊ ər b i /) [2] is a village, electoral ward and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England immediately south of the neighbouring market town of Thirsk.Although the boundary between the two parishes runs very close to Thirsk town centre, the village retains its own identity and has a separate Parish Council.

In 1995, a group of volunteers got together to run it as a social project for Thirsk and Sowerby, initially as a Thirsk Town Council venture, [9] although that management lasted only a year. Thirsk and Sowerby Town Hall is a municipal building in Westgate, Sowerby, North Yorkshire, England. Although it is commonly described as being in Thirsk, it is on the south side of Westgate, which is in Sowerby. [1] The building is used as the meeting place of Thirsk Town Council and of Sowerby Parish Council.
Sowerby was born on 28 October 1963 in Ripon, West Riding of Yorkshire. [3] His father, Geoffrey (a priest), [4] was a minor canon of Ripon Minster. [5] He was educated at Barnard Castle School, then a direct grant grammar school in Barnard Castle, County Durham, and at St Aidan's and St John Fisher Associated Sixth Form, an ecumenical sixth form college in Harrogate, North Yorkshire.
