U.S. Route 280 (US 280) is a spur of U.S. Highway 80.It currently runs for 392 miles (631 km) from Blitchton, Georgia, at US 80 to Birmingham, Alabama at I-20/I-59.For much of its route, US 280 travels through rural areas and smaller cities in southern Georgia and east central Alabama.

In Vestavia Hills, a suburb of Birmingham, the route crosses Interstate 65 yet again, its last crossing in the county. Snaking up to Homewood, another suburb of Birmingham, the route reaches U.S. Route 280. At its interchange with U.S. 280, the route becomes the Red Mountain Expressway, descending down Red Mountain.
All northbound lanes of I-35W were closed at Spur 280 due to the incident, TxDOT said Thursday morning. TxDOT said about 12:30 p.m. that the right lane was open as well as access to Texas 121.
The Highland Avenue overpass was completed in January 1967. The cut was completed later that same year, and the highway opened on April 16, 1970.
