Cardiff Mental Hospital, later Whitchurch Hospital, opened in 1908. Velindre Hospital opened in 1956. In 1898 and 1922, parts of Whitchurch were absorbed into Cardiff, becoming amalgamated as a suburb of the City of Cardiff in 1967. Rhiwbina (/ r u ˈ b aɪ n ə /; Welsh: Rhiwbeina [r̥ɪuˈbɛina], also Rhiwbina) is a suburb and community in the north of Cardiff, the capital of Wales.Formerly a small hamlet within the parish of Whitchurch, Rhiwbina was developed throughout the twentieth century, and is now a separate ward.
Also placed in the new parish was the nearby church of St Michael & All Angels. This was erected on Whitchurch Road in 1922 as the successor to the combined school and chapel dedicated to St Monica which had opened in 1893. The 1922 structure was a tin tabernacle, which lasted in use until the 1990s.
