Hermetia illucens, the black soldier fly, is a common and widespread fly of the family Stratiomyidae. Since the late 20th century, H. illucens has increasingly been gaining attention because of its usefulness for recycling organic waste and generating animal feed.

Chorisops tibialis, the dull four-spined legionnaire, is a Palearctic species of soldier fly. [4] [5] [6] A small (Size 3 to 4 mm.) slender fly. The male has a metallic green thorax and scutellum (both are greenish black in females). The humeri may be yellowish. The scutellum bears four yellow spines.
Exaireta spinigera commonly known as the garden soldier fly, [4] blue soldier fly, [5] and spiked lion fly [6] in Russian. The species is a part of the Stratiomyidae family. Adult Sciaridae are small, dark flies 1–11 mm long and usually <5 mm long.
