According to a recent NOAA report on sea level rise Hawaii is expected to gain approximately 6-8 inches in sea level rise by 2050. This would result in moderate flooding occurring almost ten times more often than it does today. North West Hawaiian Islands are expected to receive the worst of this flooding effecting the habitats of its wildlife.
With its boundaries including waters from the shoreline to depths of 600 feet (180 m) in many areas, the sanctuary encompasses a variety of marine ecosystems, including seagrass beds and coral reefs. Much of the sanctuary has fringing coral reefs close to shore and deeper coral reefs offshore. Hawaii's coral reefs are noted for their isolation.
It was discovered in 1820 by Captain Joseph Allen of the ship Maro, after whose ship the reef was named. With a total area of 747 square miles (1,935 km 2), it is the largest coral reef in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. It contains 37 species of stony coral. Unlike most atolls, the coral extends out from the center like spokes on a wheel.
