Le Mars / l ə ˈ m ɑːr z / is a city and the county seat of Plymouth County, Iowa, United States. [2] It is located on the Floyd River northeast of Sioux City. The population was 10,571 at the time of the 2020 census. [3] Le Mars is located within America Township and is part of the Sioux City metropolitan area.

Le Mars is located in northwest Iowa, which is the last part of the state to be settled. [2] Settlement came with the railroads. The Iowa Falls & Sioux City Railroad was built through the region in 1869 to 1870. In June 1870, the town was platted, and two years later it won an election to move the county seat from Melbourne.
The county seat was moved to Le Mars in 1872 after its citizens offered to build a new courthouse. It served the county for two years when another courthouse was built for $3,000. [ 2 ] The present courthouse replaced it in 1902 after a $72,000 bond referendum passed. [ 3 ]

The city of Le Mars acquired 60 acres (24 ha) of land for the park in 1935 for $15,000, and it was dedicated later that year. The state agreed to carryout improving the park and building new facilities over a span of five years as Works Progress Administration (WPA) projects. Work on a nine-hole golf course began in 1936.
