Ellsworth County was established February 26, 1867. The county was named after the old Fort Ellsworth , named in honor of 2nd Lieutenant Allen Ellsworth of the 7th Iowa Cavalry (Company H), who supervised construction of the fort in 1864 during the American Civil War . [ 4 ]

It is located in the Smoky Hills region of north-central Kansas in Ellsworth County, Kansas, United States. These rocks are the remains of beach sands and sediments of the Cretaceous Period, the interval of geologic time from about 144 to 66 million years ago. Sandstone and sedimentary rock is held together by natural cement.
Ellsworth Township covers an area of 34.22 square miles (88.6 km 2) and contains two incorporated settlements: Ellsworth (the county seat) and Kanopolis. According to the USGS, it contains one cemetery, Memorial. The streams of East Oak Creek, East Spring Creek, Oak Creek, Oxide Creek, Spring Creek and West Oak Creek run through this township.

K-140 is a 33.224-mile-long (53.469 km) state highway in Ellsworth and Saline Counties in the U.S. state of Kansas. The highway travels through mostly rural land between the cities of Ellsworth and Salina. In addition to connecting Ellsworth and Salina, K-140 travels through the communities of Carneiro, Brookville, and Bavaria.
