The last five volumes were issued on 20 June 1995, and featured songs covering 1983 to 1985. Additional themed volumes—New Wave Dance Hits, [2] New Wave Women, [3] New Wave Halloween, [4] and New Wave Christmas [5] —came out in subsequent years. Rhino Records discontinued the series, due to rights issues and with no plans to re-release them.

Scary Thieves were a short-lived English 1980s new wave band, best known for the hits "Tell Me Girl" and "The Waiting Game". Both songs are included on the Hardest Hits compilations, which focus on obscure new wave/synth bands that have little to big cult followings.
Later, drummer Bob Sale joined with the band and they began writing and producing new music. The Monroes first album of all new music was released in 2019 to positive reviews. The band began performing the new material. The song Ball & Chain became the band’s opener at most concerts, with its tongue in cheek lyrics and rhythmic country pop sound.
