The Great Brain is a series of children's books by American author John Dennis Fitzgerald (1906–1988). Set in the small town of Adenville, Utah , between 1896 and 1898, the stories are loosely based on Fitzgerald's childhood experiences.
Thus began his most well-known books, The Great Brain series, in which his characters are loosely based on people from his own family and community, including himself. Fitzgerald published many stories in magazines and he co-wrote two textbooks about creative writing. Children's books are seen as the more important of his writings. [6]

I agree. The books are great children's reading, giving an account (if not totally accurate) events of another era in time. It is something of a period piece, though many of the situations are out of time. Basketball is WAY out of time, as is the sawing a women in half trick. However, the anti-Hero is Tom, who really does have a great brain.
