Sextant, HO 211, 260, & 229, + Nautical Books I do not know the person selling this, but remember several members where looking for used sextants; seems like a pretty good deal.

  3. Sextants: Tamaya vs. Astra - SailNet Community

The sight can go out of focus as you rotate the sextant. Then there are subtleties, i.e. on the Plath Horizon Ultra, there's a slight green tint to one side and a slight red tint to the other. If you're doing a star sighting at night, the result is that the star "pops" into a whiter color when it is fully aligned.

  4. Bubble sextants? - SailNet Community

    www.sailnet.com/threads/bubble-sextants.351831

As you probably already know, a bubble "sextant" (as in those used in aircraft during WW2) is probably really a bubble octant rather than a sextant. That would only allow sighting between objects up to 90° apart (1/8 circle x 2) versus a sextant being able to sight between objects up to 120° apart (1/6 circle x 2).

Assuming you read your sextant correctly, and didn't make a mistake with the arithmetic, you probably didn't shoot the moon when it was on the meridian. According to the same table, the moon's altitude was around 31.5° some time when its LHA was +/- 33°, i.e. GHA = 90° or 156°, which (according to the almanac), should have happened roughly ...

  6. Starter Sextant? - SailNet Community

Yes, I used the sextant a fair bit once I hit the trade winds and the boat was steering itself well. In other forums, people complain about race requirements to use a sextant. I agree that in the age of GPS, the sextant is a superfluous tool. But what the heck else is a bored sailor to do with his time?

  7. FS: 1985 Freiberger Sextant - SailNet Community

    www.sailnet.com/threads/fs-1985-freiberger-sextant.349705

1985 Freiberger Marine Sextant. Excellent condition. Scope is clean and clear, no haze or fungus. Mirrors and shades are good. Includes adjustment wrench. Light works; I'd recommend finding a screw-in LED bulb instead of the incandescent as they are more robust and use less power...

  9. Celestaire Astra IIIB Professional Sextant with Case!

    www.sailnet.com/threads/celestaire-astra-iiib-professional-sextant-with-case...

Celestaire Astra IIIB Deluxe Sextant, Cased The frame is made from lightweight aluminum alloy which resists corrosion. Aluminum alloy is not new to sextant construction. It has long been used by many manufacturers for lightweight versions of their heavier brass or bronze sextants in order to reduce arm fatigue and unsteadiness among infrequent ...

Bauer's 'Sextant Handbook is an excellent book.' Some good tips on setup and maintenance. The author tends to favor newer instruments with larger mirrors, but it seems to me a properly adjusted MKII can do the job - though I've never done a sight in heavy weather. Anyway, enjoy the sextant, and hopefully you'll find the right wrench. Capt Dan G>

  11. Owners Manual for Tamaya Sextant M#631 | SailNet Community

Some talk that the gov. was getting out of publishing it-but I just saw a new version of volume 2 at west marine two weeks ago. Probably cheaper on Amazon. Vol. 2 is what you want, if it has sextant adjustment in it now, for the tables and piloting info-it's the vol. you want on your boat.
