Many characters look slightly different. It is simply animation style changing over time and the animators deciding to draw characters with different styles on purpose. Though certain characters like Marceline have a lot of development as the show goes on, so it makes sense that her style/appearance may change slightly as her personality changes
“O Marceline, why you so mean” “I’m not mean, I’m a thousand years old, and I just lost track of my moral code” “O Marceline, can’t you see these guys are in pain” “No I can’t, I’m invested in this very cute video game”
Marceline is codependent, and her morality is really based who she is hanging with at the time. She’s on the verge of evil at the start of the series, after spending so long hanging around with Ash and the Ghosts, but slowly becomes more and more moral as the series goes on, due to being influenced by Finn, PB, and to a lesser extent, Simon.

Marceline's story starts around 1000 years before the start of Adventure Time [*1] when she is born to a primordial demon father Hunson Abadeer and human mother Elise. Hunson Abadeer was and is still the fiendish ruler of the Nightosphere dimension and so only had a very short time in the living Land of Ooo before returning to the Nightosphere.
I love the fact that the first time you watch the episode you think that Marceline is probably just giving honest advice about things she would like 100% no, the viewer is meant to infer that Marceline is deliberately fucking with Finn. Like a big prank, similar to how she fucks with him in Heat Signature & Henchman
I will state this: There is no 'Filler' in Adventure Time. Adventure time, and by extent, some other shows such as Steven Universe are written to exist on an episodic basis, or most recently in a multiple episode Story Arc, such as Islands or the Steven Bombs. Each episode is intended to expand on the character arcs, and possibly set up future ...
According to the adventure time wiki, Marceline is “about as tall as Ice King”. For PB I saw 5’8” and 5’10” on a cursory google search, so those are likely estimates and not canon. Reply reply
In Adventure Time, the songs and their contents represent what a character is willing to openly say about themselves, others, the world, etc. In Steven Universe, a song is internal. It outwardly conveys to the viewer what a character might be unable to, unwilling to, or scared to convey.
Much of Adventure Time revolves around confronting that hard truth, but no one, perhaps, has had to face up to it so directly as Marceline the Vampire Queen. So yeah, the idea that Marceline is somehow void of character in the later seasons or that Stakes is pointless are both appalling opinions to me that needed addressing.
