Featherston (Māori: Paetūmōkai [4]) is a town in the South Wairarapa District, in the Wellington Region of New Zealand's North Island.It is at the eastern foothills of Remutaka Range close to the northern shore of Lake Wairarapa, 63 km (39 mi) north-east of central Wellington and 37 km (23 mi) south-west of Masterton.
Longwood is an historic house south of Featherston, New Zealand, built for the Pharazyn family in 1906 and home to the Riddiford family for much of the 20th century. It replaced a c.1857 house built by Henry Bunny which he named after Longwood House , Napoleon's residence on Saint Helena .

Lambton Quay is named after John Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham, the first chairman of directors of the New Zealand Company. [1] Dense bush, down to the harbour's edge, covered much of the area until 1840 and, at the site of the Old Bank Arcade , it could be hard to get round the rocks at high tide at what was then Windy Point, or Clay Point.
Featherston was initially a station of some importance, being the railhead for two years until the opening of the line through to Masterton. It was opened with a seven-room station building, a 60-by-30-foot (18.3 m × 9.1 m) goods shed, a locomotive shed and watering facilities for the locomotives, but no coal supply until 1888.
The mayor of Featherston officiated over the Featherston Borough of New Zealand, which was administered by the Featherston Borough Council. The office existed from 1917 until 1989, when Featherston Borough was amalgamated into the South Wairarapa District Council as part of the 1989 local government reforms .
