Gould was born in Roxbury, New York, to Mary More (1798–1841) and John Burr Gould (1792–1866). [5] His maternal grandfather, Alexander T. More, was a businessman, and his great-grandfather, John More, was a Scottish immigrant who founded the town of Moresville, New York.
By the early 20th century, the Goulds lost control over virtually all these railroads largely due to mismanagement by Jay's son, George Jay Gould. [3] Despite losing the source of much of their wealth, subsequent generations of the family continued to be involved in business, politics and philanthropy.
Gould was born on February 6, 1864, the eldest son of Jay Gould (1836–1892) and Helen Day Miller (1838–1889). His father was a leading American railroad developer and speculator who has been referred to as one of the ruthless robber barons of the Gilded Age, whose success at business made him one of the richest men of his era.
