Heat illness is a spectrum of disorders due to increased body temperature. It can be caused by either environmental conditions or by exertion. It includes minor conditions such as heat cramps, heat syncope, and heat exhaustion as well as the more severe condition known as heat stroke. [1] It can affect any or all anatomical systems. [2]
In addition to a high body temperature, they will also experience central nervous system dysfunction such as alteration in their mental status and slurred speech. Another possible illness that heat stroke can lead to is rhabdomyolysis or rapid injury to skeletal muscle especially when heat stroke is caused by physical exertion. [40]
Part of the cause for this dysfunction is the early involvement of the quadriceps muscles. [1] Weakness of the tibialis anterior muscle is responsible for foot drop. Another common early symptom is trouble manipulating the fingers, such as difficulty with tasks such as turning doorknobs or gripping keys.
Heat stroke or heatstroke, also known as sun-stroke, is a severe heat illness that results in a body temperature greater than 40.0 °C (104.0 °F), [4] along with red skin, headache, dizziness, and confusion. [2] Sweating is generally present in exertional heatstroke, but not in classic heatstroke. [5] The start of heat stroke can be sudden or ...

Acute flaccid myelitis: a polio-like syndrome that causes muscle weakness and paralysis. Poliomyelitis: [1] disease caused by viral infection in the gray matter with symptoms of muscle paralysis or weakness; Transverse myelitis: caused by axonal demyelination encompassing both sides of the spinal cord; Leukomyelitis: lesions in the white matter
Post-polio syndrome (PPS, poliomyelitis sequelae) is a group of latent symptoms of poliomyelitis (polio), occurring in more than 80% of polio infections. The symptoms are caused by the damaging effects of the viral infection on the nervous system and typically occur 15 to 30 years after an initial acute paralytic attack.
