   For the record, I ran an 8 GB 2014 2.6 GHz Core i5 Mac mini with 500 GB NVMe SSD + original 1 TB HD for a year (until late 2022) as my primary work machine. I use Office applications, multiple browser tabs, a VPN client for remote Windows access, Mail, Messages, Calendar, and light Photos, and it all worked quite well in Monterey.

   Just read earlier posts and check the main thread about NVMe upgrades on Mac mini 2014. It’s a very easy upgrade, you can definitely do it yourself. Parts you mentioned are good to go. You’ll only need a T6 security torx screwdriver. Just follow the instructions step by step you’ll find on iFixit’s guide.

   It IS dumb to buy a base model Mac mini (especially an M2 version; or for that matter a base model M2 Pro Mac mini; but that's a whole different topic). I'm not entirely sure what you're waiting on M4 (or M4 Pro, M4 Max, or M4 Ultra, for that matter) to do that M2 (or M2 Pro, M2 Max, or M2 Ultra) doesn't already do.

   The 2014 Mac mini will likely get macOS 13. Apple usually supports the OS until 5 years or longer after a Mac is discontinued. The 2014 Mac mini was discontinued in 2018, which means it will likely be supported until at least 2023 (with 2 years of security updates after that).
